“Air Fete gives us an opportunity to show our British friends the professionalism of our people and the equipment that they use day in and day out and will use in harm’s way if required,” said Gen. Gregory Martin, U.S. Air Forces in Europe commander. That hard work and professionalism by Mildenhall members was the key to making Air Fete a success. “Our people did a super job,” said Col. Bruce Burda, 100th Air Refueling Wing commander.“We worked all year long for this and it really paid off with super flying and smooth ground operations. I thank all of Team Mildenhall and our partners at Lakenheath for their work.”

The huge crowds did present problems, especially on the roads outside the base over the weekend.  All 50,000-car parking spaces were filled up.  Cars were parked in every space available, including the Mildenhall industrial estate and many small, private lots.

For next year, the base, along with the Suffolk Constabulary, will try to find more park and ride locations to help with the traffic congestion around the base.“Mildenhall is a typical rural Suffolk town,” said Superintendent Doug Paxton, Suffolk Constabulary. “The roads around the base are not designed for that volume of traffic. However, we will meet with base representatives and discuss what we can do to make it better next year,” he said. Air Fete is held each year on the final weekend in May. Next year’s Air Fete is scheduled for May 25-26, 2002.
