Northern Lights
Hailing from Canada with its five
Canadian, U.S. and Swiss pilots, the Northern Lights Aerobatics team performed
stunts which had the audience spellbound with excitement and disbelief. Flying
300-hp propeller driven Extra-300 aircraft. They flew the 300 from 1994 till
2001 in 2001 an oil-industry executive and part owner of the Northern Lights USA
team, had funded the team's switch to L-39s. The year 2001 was to be a
rebuilding year in which pilots would get acquainted with their new aircraft.
The team, apparently, wanted to compete with the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds on
the airshow circuit. The Northern Lights dress sharp. They fly fast. They're the
best-known civilian aerobatic team in North America and for seven years have
been thrilling millions of people at airshows with their graceful formation
flying and breathtaking solo manoeuvres. And now they fly jets. They've replaced
the brightly red, blue and yellow of their Extra 300Ls with drab gray, and the
whine of their Lycoming engines with the sound of thunder. Unfortunate they quit
flying some were in ??. We can't trace them any were if you have more info,
please let us now. : ej@sky-flash.com
